Inspired from a Navajo mandala, I began this piece as an interpretation of that concept.  For me, the possibilities as to the meanings behind this work are limitless.

Exploring the Feminine Series

Who is woman?  What are her secrets?   In so many societies throughout history, women have been regarded as the 'lesser sex'.  But, women have played a pivotal role throughout history.  I seek to understand the 'feminine' better, which is, in a way, a means to better understand myself.  In addition, by seeking this understanding, perhaps women can be a source of true, innate wisdom that can be appreciated once again to a higher degree in modern society.  Mother Nature is feminine, too.  If we can garner a greater understanding for her, and imbibe her wisdom within us, then perhaps we as human beings can respect her planet to a greater degree, and reverse much of the damage we have caused to her.  Stay tuned for the images!  They will be on the website within a couple of days!!

Native America Series

The following eleven paintings explore not only my heritage but a piece of history that has helped shape the Americas today.  Ancient peoples from the Anasazi to the Incas have left an indelible mark on our history.  My artwork seeks to understand some of their wisdom, knowledge, patterns and designs to better comprehend myself as well as those cultures themselves.  Before doing each piece in this series, I sought out information on that particular culture.  In the Mayan tradition, I found the use of hieroglyphics that was able to inspire me to do several pieces.  In the Aztec tradition, I found meaning in their design and patterns that inspired me to create two works that derived from the Aztec culture.  Each culture is unique and has something to offer to all of us; this series specifically aims to achieve a higher understanding of these peoples.

Mariposa

Picture
Acrylic
18"x24"
2009
The American Southwest is home to a variety of butterflies.  The butterflies were a part of Anasazi culture, as well.  The idea for this painting came from the idea that many different kinds of insects and beautiful creatures exist in the arid desert regions where the Anasazi (and other Native American Indians) lived.

Tree Frog

Picture
Acrylic
18"x24"
2009
Another animal that frequented the same areas as the ancient Anasazi, the Tree Frog is a whimsical work done with some Anasazi inspiration.

Hopi Gecko ~ SOLD

Picture
Acrylic
18" x 24"
2009

The inspiration for this painting came after a visit to the Anasazi Cliff Dwellings in Manitou Springs, CO.  The patterns and amazing technology these people used were truly awe-inspiring.  I studied the patterns they used on their ceramics and crafts.  Their use of lines and shapes in narrow ways inspired me to try using "narrow" lines and shapes.

Raven

Picture
Acrylic

18"x24"

2009

Many cultures have a symbol for the Raven.  In Native American cultures, it has played a role throughout their history.  This is my rendition of a Raven, done using Native American patterns.

Yucatan ~ SOLD

Picture
Acrylic

11"x16"

2009

This painting takes its inspiration from Mayan patterns. I stylized and abstracted those patterns and used vivid colors to render this image.  A labyrinth-like angular maze characterizes part of this image.

Kin of the Maya

Picture
Acrylic

18"x24"

2009

Kin is the Mayan Sun deity that I researched and then portrayed using my own style.  This painting exhibits some Mayan symbols and colors.  In addition, part of the idea I got for this image comes from the Fejervary-Mayer Codex.  However, I added my own style to the image, and added my own interpretation.

Inti ~ SOLD

Acrylic

18" x 24"

2009

This painting was inspired by the Inca sun god Inti.  I created my own stylized version and interpretation using my own patterns and other patterns in a similar manner to what the Inca would have used.  In my painting and research, I continue to explore Native American cultures to learn about myself and the past and use those to look forward into a new realm.

Native Eagle

Acrylic

18" x 24"

2009

This painting was inspired by the Native American symbol for Eagle.  A sign of freedom, liberty, peace, and more, this stylized rendition combines the ancient with the modern with an emphasis on color contrast.

Inca

Acrylic

18" x 24"

2009

This painting is the first in a series of three.  I am fascinated by the Incan, Mayan, and Aztec cultures and each piece in the series represents which culture I researched.  After researching, I then did a series of sketches to come up with an abstracted image that incorporates elements from that ancient culture and combine with more modern designs and my own style.  The result is a piece not like I have done before but also striking and incorporating 'colors of the earth'.

Maya: Sun

Acrylic

18" x 24"

2009

Aztec: Bird ~ SOLD

SOLD!
Acrylic

18" x 24"

2009

This work is third in the series of "Aztec, Incas, Mayas".  You will notice the characteristic labyrinth in the lower right hand corner.  Also, this idea for this painting came from a bird culture from a museum in Mexico.  I flattened and stylized the sculptural image.  The result is a painting with symbolism from Aztec sculpture and combining with my own style, but still using the same colors, consistent with the rest of the works in this series.
